Raw Banana Fry Recipe | Vazhakkai Varuval | Plantain Stir fry

Raw Banana Fry or Vazhakkai Fry is a traditional poriyal or side dish from South India.   Raw banana is one of those vegetables (apart from potato, of course) which tastes awesome when stir fried. Unlike other stir fries, aratikaya vepudu cooks real fast.  This vazhakkai curry tastes awesome with sambar or rasam and goes well most of the rice varieties too.

Ingredients:

  • Raw Banana - 3 peeled, and cut into thick circles
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt - as required
  • Oil - 2 tbl spn

How to Prepare Vazhakkai Poriyal:

  • Wash, peel and cut bananas into thick round slices, immerse in water and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a kadai and add cumin seeds.  When they start to splutter, add the banana pieces, turmeric and mix well and let them cook on medium flame for about 3-4 mins.
  • Add ginger-garlic paste and all the spices powders and salt and mix well and close with a lid.  Let it cook on low flame.  Keep stirring in between so that the pieces don't stick to the bottom of the kadai.
  • Once the banana pieces are cooked, check for salt and adjust if required and switch off.
  • Crispy and tasty Vazhakkai fry is ready.  Serve hot with sambar, rasam or lemon rice.
