Onion Chutney | Vengaya Thogayal | Ulli Pachadi

Onion Chutney or ulli chutney is one of the popular side dishes served along with South Indian breakfast items.  It has a beautiful balance of flavors which makes it an excellent choice of chutney to be served with idli or dosa.  This can be made real quick and tastes good when made fresh.

onion chutney, ulli pachadi

Ingredients:

  • Onion - 2 medium sized
  • Dry red chillies - 2
  • Tamarind Paste - a small gooseberry sized
  • Curry leaves - a few
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt - As requied
  • Oil - 3-4 tsp

How To Prepare Onion Chutney For Idli or Dosa:

  • Cut the onions into big square pieces.
  • Heat 1 tsp of oil in a kadai and fry the red chillies first and once they get a little brown, take them out and add onions in the same oil and fry them till they are light brown and remove and keep aside to cool.  (Frying the onions help to get rid of the raw smell).
  • Grind all these to a coarse paste - onions, red chillies, tamarind and salt.  Do not add water.
  • Heat the remaining oil in the kadai and add mustard seeds.  Once they start spluttering, add curry leaves and the ground paste and mix well and let it cook for 2 minutes and remove from fire.
  • Onion chutney is now ready to serve with idlis and dosas.
